12/08/2010 – 17:41 Service Call 32/10

The crew of Robert Oliver, Grahame Wood, Ross Dunn & Steven Potts launched Relief Lifeboat B815 “Peterborough Beer Festival III” to reports of two persons in the water near a yellow boat off the beach at the North end of Whitley Bay.

The lifeboat made easy work of the swell running to the North of the station to arrive on scene after only four minutes. After a quick search it quickly became apparent that the boats was a local fishing boat on her mooring and the objects were in fact lobster pot markers. The call was put down to a false alarm with very good intent.

The lifeboat then returned South towards Cullercoat, where the crew picked up a lifeguard who was looking very tired after riding all the way from Cullercoats on the sled of the Rescue Water Craft (jet ski modified for Search & Rescue work). The lifeguards had launched to assist in the search but due to the heavy seas and that they were washing down after a busy day on the beach had made slower progress than that of the Lifeboat. The Lifeboat then followed the RWC back to the launch site at Cullercoats at around 18:00 and after dropping the lifeguard off returned to station.
